Ben Thessen is a professional Piano Technician living in Minneapolis, MN. After completing his studies at the University of Northern Iowa, where he majored in Music Technology, Ben sought out an apprenticeship in the field of Piano Tuning and Repair, and currently works as a full-time piano technician. Ben is an experienced technician who is able to provide professional, high-quality services at an affordable and competitive price.

Piano Tuning

$120

Full service piano tune-up. Includes complementary mechanical inspection and evaluation. Typically takes between 60-90 minutes. Tunes the piano to itself.

Now thru 01/05, Churches and Schools will receive a discounted holiday rate of $100 per piano for a Standard Fine Tuning! To reserve this offer, please book a standard fine tuning under the name of your organization, and the discount will be applied manually after the appointment has been booked.

Piano Repair

$100 per hour + material costs

Common services include: Repair of sticky/non-functional keys, string replacement, alignment/regulation of the mechanical action, and general repairs. An estimate for repair costs is always provided prior to the start of the work. Repairs over $300 require a 50% down payment.

Repair appointments are scheduled on an individual basis, as the services needed will impact the length of the appointment. When booking, please indicate any potential repairs. Some repairs can be completed on-site at the time of tuning, while other repairs may require components of the piano to be taken back to my shop.

Specialty Services

Piano Cleaning: Removes dust and debris from inside the piano. $60 for Uprights, $100 for Grands. Typically takes between 30-45 minutes.

Temperament Adjustment: For adjusting the temperament of the piano by a significant amount, often up to concert pitch. Your technician may recommend a follow-up tuning appointment within 30 days for an additional charge. Recommended for pianos that haven’t been tuned in 5+ years. Typically takes between 90 and 120 minutes. $185

Piano Evaluation: A comprehensive inspection of the quality of a piano, with a emailed report and estimated valuation. Tuning included. Typically takes between 90-120 minutes. $160

All appointments more than 20 miles from Downtown Minneapolis will have an added $20 travel surcharge

Any cancellations within 12 hours of the start of the appointment will be invoiced for a $50 cancellation fee

Schedule your appointment using the form to the right. Please be advised that any cancellations within 12 hours of the start of the appointment will incur a $50 cancellation fee. Additionally, please ensure that all pets are either kenneled or put away for the duration of the appointment for the safety of your technician.

If you are reaching out regarding a previously discussed repair, please contact me directly at bentpianotuning@gmail.com to arrange a specific time for your appointment. If you know that your piano has repair needs, but are unsure what those needs are, please book the “Service Call” option, which covers an hour of repairs, as well as a basic assessment of the piano’s condition. This service does not include a tuning. Any work extending beyond the 1 hour appointment timeframe will be charged at $100 an hour.

Piano tuning requires a high degree of concentration and a fairly quiet environment, so please take care to avoid scheduling your tuning at times where a high level of noise can be expected. Additionally, every piano requires a different level of care, so please note that the start/end times of your appointment can vary by 15-20 minutes.
